Idalina
With Knurl, Rafaele Andrade (BR) built a hybrid, solar-powered and reprogrammable 16-string cello that allows artists and audiences to interact. Idalina is a berimbau percussion technique, which was danced by slaves during the colonisation period in Brazil, to prepare for their escape from their owner. In this composition for Knurl, Rafaele works with three different elements: The knife, the Idalina rhythm and the colour and playability of the berimbau.
This composition is part of the album UN-BOW, where Rafaele Andrade brings together bows of instruments from all over the world around the practice of Knurl.
Rafaele Andrade is a Brazilian composer, performer and pioneer of contemporary and experimental music. With a background in conducting, composition, cello, live coding and sonology, she designed her own instrument, which she composes and performs with in different contexts. Her ambition is to reshape the system within the music industry. In her practice, she promotes fair music distribution, social inclusion and sustainability. Rafaele Andrade curated a project for UNESCO on Latin American women composers. She graduated in Sonology at The Hague Conservatory (NL, 2020), Composition and Conducting (BR, 2016) and is now completing her Masters in New Audiences & Innovative Practices. She is also active in the composers association Curitiba (BR), iii (The Instrument Inventors) and Holland Coding Live.
