Opening event: Klankenbos Spring Expo

Christine Eyene - Elsa M´Bala - Mo Laudi - Megan Leigh Heilig and Curating Lab participants

Sat 29 May 2021 - 14:00 to 17:00
Het Klankenbos, Toekomstlaan 5, 3910 Pelt

The curators and artists of Curating Lab will take you on an intimate afternoon in Klankenbos, with performances and collective listening sessions in open air, as the opening event of Klankenbos Spring Expo.

The opening of Klankenbos Spring Expo is hosted by the participants and artists of Curating Lab, and forms the grand finale of their five-day workshop week. Expect intimate listening sessions in the middle of the forest by Mo Laudi (FR/ZA) and a sound performance by artist Elsa M'Bala (CM/DE). A living archive is created through sound, with new material from Curating Lab, recordings and archival material connected to African and Cameroonian history. Filmmaker and artist Megan Leigh Heilig (DE/ZA) captures Curating Lab on film and shares the first audiovisual impressions of her documentary. The afternoon starts at 2 pm at the sound installation Radio Forest with an introduction by Christine Eyene (UK/CM) and the project participants.

From Tuesday 25 May 2021 to Saturday 29 May 2021, international curator Christine Eyene and sound artists Elsa M´Bala and Mo Laudi will work together with people from various communities on two new sound art works during an intensive workshop series, Curating Lab, in Provinciaal Domein Dommelhof. How the works will take shape still remains to be seen. What is certain is that they will be created from the personal sound experiences of the participants, inspired by the growing awareness of ‘home’ sounds during periods of lockdown. During the workshop week, they will explore the notion of natural and artificial boundaries in relation to migration and identity. Through field recordings, samples from personal archives and everyday objects; they explore how sound experiences in new regions contribute to the formation of new identities and how, conversely, new identities transform sound landscapes. Curating Lab makes the results known through auditory creations, but also by making forgotten or silent voices visible.

After the opening event, you can visit the other works from the Klankenbos Spring Expo by artists Amber Meulenijzer, Anne van der Star and Nika Schmitt. These artworks can be viewed free of charge in Klankenbos for another week.

An initiative from Musica, Impulse Centre for Music in collaboration with C-TAKT, Provincial Domain Dommelhof and the Municipality of Pelt, as part of Sounds Now, co-financed by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
